the tea act

The Tea Act



What was it:  American colonists could not buy tea unless it came from the East India Company. The Tea Act lowered the price on this East India tea so much that it was way below the price of tea sold by other people.

Cause:The East Indian Company wasn't making enough money so the British decided to give it some more business. 

Effect: The colonists saw this law "taxation without representation" because it meant that they did not have a choice to buy tea from anyone else without spending a lot more money. when this decision was made in the British Parliament the colonists had no vote in what happened. Their response was to refuse to unload the tea from the ships. 

Definitions: 
Parliament- Group of people who make the laws in Britain’s government
East Indian Company- the British company that the colonists were trading with
